Marvin Horner

  • Born 30 Jun 1922.
  • Married in 1945
  • Died in 1998

   Events:

1. Raised by the Laaksonens in Kaleva, MI. Marvin Horner was born to Edith Laaksonen during her apparently short-lived and unstable marriage to a man named Horner. Because of the marital problems and Edith’s own problems, Marvin was raised by Otto and Ida Laaksonen, for which reason Finnish was the language at home. Marvin did not remember his grandparents as being particularly warm, especially Otto.

2. WWII hero, 1940s. Marvin fought in the Pacific theater in WWII. He was seriously wounded (head wound) by "friendly" fire, and spent from April 1945 to June 30, 1946 in a VA hospital.

3. Marvin had no more than a high school education, but ran a successful liquor store with his wife Leena. They had no children. Marvin and his cousins Donald, Marvin and Helen kept in touch, and in Marvin's later years, made several trips together. Marvin developed type 2 diabetes (as did grandmother Ida), and in his last year or two he was not in very good condition.

   Marriage Information:

Marvin married Leena in 1945.
