Marvin graduated from Mackenzie
High School in Detroit,
Michigan, in 1954. Marvin completed
three years of undergrad at Wayne
State University
and the University of Michigan,
fulfilling the dental school requirements. He did not get a degree. Marvin
started U of Michigan Dental School in 1957. Marvin followed his older
brother’s example and changed his surname from Laaksonen
to Larson in 1960. Marvin got his dental degree in 1961. Marvin entered
the U.S. Army upon graduation, and proudly spent three years serving his
country in Germany,
discharged at the rank of captain.
Marvin moved to Rochester
(later Rochester Hills), Michigan,
a suburb of Detroit, in 1964.
Marvin is the only one of Yrjö’s children to stay in Michigan,
or even in the Great Lakes region for that matter,
but recently his sister Helen and her husband Bob joined their son Alan in Troy,
Michigan. Marvin married Marge in 1966.
Erik was born in 1969, followed by Niles
in 1971. Their house is conveniently located adjacent to the area golf
course, something Marvin has regularly taken advantage of. Marvin enjoys
projects, and built the addition to their house himself, also the patio.
Not one to shy away from challenges, he has spearheaded the Kaleva Salvation Project
and the Laaksonen Centennial Tree Farm Historical Monument Project,
developed the Laaksonen lumber industry and is currently engaged in
lucrative real estate ventures with parcels of the Kaleva properties.
Marvin practiced dentistry until 1997. During that time
he was an essential part of the Detroit Lions organization, maintaining the
dental health of the players (team dentist). Now retired, he’s working on
his memoirs, so we should be expecting a lot of good stuff for the site and
interesting dirt on other Laaksonens in the months to come.
